Millions of people will visit U.S. beaches this summer and nothing ruins a day at the beach like diarrhea and vomiting. A new EPA proposal considers water quality acceptable for recreation that would let 1 in 28 beachgoers get sick. Stand up for your family's heath and tell EPA to strengthen its proposal and improve protection of public health . Send EPA a message before the February 21st comment deadline.

Areas of Special Biological Significance
Require the Highest Water Quality

The State of California has dozens of special marine reserves designated as “Areas of Special Biological Significance” (ASBS). ASBS are areas requiring protection of species or biological communities through maintaining high water quality. For 40 years, protective regulations for these special areas have helped play a role in halting offshore drilling in California, and in creating California’s network of marine protected areas -- our "national parks in the sea." Weakening and complicating protections for these special areas would undermine California’s status as a pioneer in safeguarding our coasts.
The California State Water Resources Control Board is now accepting comments on a new policy related to the protection of ASBS and the potential contribution of pollutants into these areas. Please write the State Board and urge them to:
· Maintain the utmost protection for these specially designated areas
· Ensure that no pollutants reach ASBS during dry weather
· Require regular and specific monitoring of stormwater discharges to the ASBS
· Hold polluters accountable for contributing to pollution in these special areas
Comments Due February 21, 2012 (noon)
by mail: Jeanine Townsend, Clerk to the Board
